When Jesus was criticized for receiving sinners, He didn't defend Himself. He told three stories—a lost sheep, a lost coin, and a lost son. We usually assume those stories are about the lost. What About the 99? asks us to look again. Perhaps Jesus was not simply explaining the condition of the lost; perhaps He was revealing the posture of the Father toward them. And if that is the Father's posture, the question for every disciple becomes unavoidable: Why wouldn't we want to enter the Father's joy?
